  3. Mr. Oblad,
You visited our home on 9/7/09. There are 5 voters in this household and we have a question for you. In your brochure you have stated, "I will work together with business owners for our mutual benefit".
We are aware that there was a bid given for the electrical work, on the new city hall, from a local NSL company. The local bid was turned down and given to an out of state company. Did you, being on the Planning and Zoning Commission, have any part in this decision? If so, we want to know how this helps local busineses and also how this helps the NSL economy? If not, then what would you do in this situation?

  4. I had no part in the decision of who got selected to build the new City Hall. That was done by the city council. The contractor, Hughes, made the decisions about which subcontractors would get the work including the electrical installation. I am in favor of maximizing the value for the taxpayer. I think most people search for maximum value for their money in their lives and in their businesses. This does not mean going for the cheapest price. Rather it means getting the most for your money. I believe the city and Hughes should do the same. Unfortunately the construction industry is fraught with sweetheart deals between sub-contractors and general contractors to the client's expense. I have seen this very thing as I learned the construction business. The city has experience with the Hughes company and they have performed well before. Nevertheless there should be some sort of audit to ensure that all sub-contractor hiring has been done above board. If a local contractor provides the best value to our taxpayers, then let them be hired. If someone else outside the city provides more for our money, they should get the bid. Being located within the city should not be in my estimation an automatic qualifier and a reason for getting a bid. There's no malice here. It's just business and a question of value.
